The text accompanying this engraving read: "The second great champion prize croquet meeting of the All England Croquet Club was held last week at the Club's new ground, Wimbledon. This ground is most convenient, being situated close to Wimbledon Station, from which it is reached by a direct pathway. Though the difficulty of bring the turf into a fit state for play was extreme, owing to the extraordinary drought, the dryness of the grass was in a great measure overcome by continual watering, and the success of last week's matches showed that, with fair usage, this ground will become a favourite resort for London croquet players. The enclosure is divided into twelve sections, in each of which a game can be played, and is tastefully laid out in terraces surrounded by paths, which, however, in no manner interfere with the play. At one o'clock on Monday-week play was commenced, and the first round of the Lady Members' Prize, for which ten competitors entered, was played off, Miss Walter winning the first prize, a gold locket, while the second, a pair of marble ... |
